2 ways to connect GitHub Copilot

You only need one thing: the Octopost server URL. GitHub Copilot discovers the sign-in flow on its own.

Server URL https://octopost.ai/mcp

VS Code

Add the server for yourself from the Command Palette.

  1. Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server, then choose HTTP.

  2. Paste the URL and use octopost as the server ID.

  3. After Allow, a browser window opens. Log in, pick the workspace and click Authorize.

  4. Octopost now shows up as a tool. Ask in plain language.

Shared workspace config

Commit .vscode/mcp.json so the whole team gets the server.

  1. Add this file to your repo so the whole team gets the server.

    { "servers": { "octopost": { "type": "http", "url": "https://octopost.ai/mcp" } } }
  2. Open the file in VS Code and click Start above the server entry.

  3. After Allow, a browser window opens. Log in, pick the workspace and click Authorize.

  4. Octopost now shows up as a tool. Ask in plain language.

MCP tools in Copilot run in agent mode. Your organization may need to allow MCP servers in its Copilot policies. Full reference in the MCP server docs.

What you can ask

Your whole workspace, one prompt away

GitHub Copilot only sees the tools behind the permissions you grant - read-only access is a valid choice.

Check the calendar

What is going out this week?

List scheduled, drafted and published posts, filtered by platform and date.

Draft and schedule

Draft a LinkedIn post about our new pricing for Tuesday 9 AM.

Create drafts, set a publish time and adjust the caption per network.

Reschedule or cancel

Push everything on Friday to Monday morning.

Move, edit, cancel or delete posts without opening the calendar.

Ask about performance

Which posts drove the most engagement last month?

Followers, reach, impressions, engagement, top posts and audience demographics.

Write in your brand voice

Write three Instagram captions for the summer launch.

Reads your workspace brand settings and each platform's limits before drafting.

Keep approvals in place

Send this week's drafts for review.

Posts from editors land in the approval queue, exactly as they would in the app.

Guardrails

You stay in control of what GitHub Copilot can do

  • Publishing immediately is offDrafts and scheduled posts only, until you switch it on for this connection.
  • One workspace per connectionPicked on the consent screen. Nothing outside it is visible.
  • Approvals still applyPosts from editors land in your approval queue, as they do in the app.
  • Revoke in one clickSettings → API → App Clients. Access stops on the next request.

Questions about Octopost for GitHub Copilot

Need more help? Reach out to our team.

Yes. The config can be shared in the repo, but each person signs in with their own Octopost account, so their role and approval rules apply.

Not by default. Copilot can draft and schedule posts, but publishing immediately stays off until you enable it for that connection in Settings → API → App Clients.

Any editor or agent that supports remote MCP over HTTP with OAuth can connect using the same server URL.

Remove the server in VS Code, or delete the client in Octopost under Settings → API → App Clients to revoke its tokens.
